What Makes a Good Soldier?

19 02 2007

Four boys meet with four U.S. WWII combat veterans:

""What makes someone a good soldier?" 8-year-old Colby Gustafson asked.
All four vets responded at the same time with "patriotism." When they
said it, it did not seem like the cheap shtick that we hear in
Washington from politicians cloaking themselves in the bravery of
others. It meant something coming from these guys."

Read it all here.

patriotism: devoted love, support, and defense of one’s country; national loyalty

My Sister’s Story

2 12 2006

My sister and brother-n-law have been featured in a story in Y-Life magazine.  They’ve got a pretty incredible story of how they’ve lost over 175 lbs between the two of them.  There’s a lot more to their story than what’s in the article but this will give you the highlights:

David and Sabrena’s story

You can read more about them on their MySpace pages:

How Do You Treat People?

25 04 2006

I just read a USA Today article via 43Folders titled "CEO’s say how you treat a waiter can predict a lot about character", and it has me motivated.  You’ll read of Raytheon CEO Bill Swanson, who watches potential employees to see how they treat people before he hires them.  He looks at the heart, the character of the person, not the outward appearance.  He warns us to be wary of those with "situational values".  He is essentially saying "as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise".  This is a Christ-like attribute and one I desire to nurture in myself and others.

I am usually kind to waiters, bellhops, pizza delivery guys, tech support people, factory workers etc., as I’ve filled these rolls myself; but I want to be more like Christ in how I treat all people.
